kin·dred /ˈkindrəd/ : a group of person’s related to another; kinfolk, kin, family, tribe, or clan.
Communication /kə-ˌmyü-nə-ˈkā-shən/ : sharing or exchanging thoughts, opinions, and ideas between two or more people.
Weeping willow: symbolizes new life, a willow tree can be planted in the ground and from it, a new tree will grow in its place. It’s ability to grow and survive is powerfully symbolic and shows how we can thrive in even challenging conditions.
Kindred Communication was born out of our combined passion and empathy for families of children with Autism. Our team has worked directly with families and individuals with Autism for a combined 70+ years. During that time, we have noticed an unbalanced relationship between the need for care and the availability of that care. It is our desire to deliver quality resources to you and your family. We believe that families of children with Autism can live wonderfully rich lives when given the tools to understand presuming competence, new ways of communication, and given the support to implement those new skills.
We are a community specifically designed to provide you with resources and coaching support. We teach you strategies that help you communicate with your loved one through spelling and we provide continued resources and support to meet your needs while you are working with us and beyond
Our Certified Practitioners are communication specialists and everyone on our team has a passion to work with families like yours. Each one of our practitioners come from a variety of backgrounds so we will pair you up with the perfect practitioner for you and your family. We are so glad you found us and we are here to help you.

The Team
Darlene Hanson
Co-founder, Licensed Speech and Language Pathologist, Director of Communication
Darlene Hanson is a licensed Speech and Language Pathologist with over 35 years of experience supporting individuals with complex communication needs. She is currently the Director of Speech and Language at Kindred Speech and Language Therapy, where she guides the clinical vision of the practice while supporting a dynamic team of therapists and the families they serve.
Darlene’s work has spanned schools, clinics, and homes, with a focus on augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), access to AAC/motor planning needs, social communication skills, and building self advocacy skills for individuals who do not use spoken words as their primary mode of communication. She is known for her person-centered approach, her collaborative partnerships with families and educators, and her commitment to presuming competence in all individuals.
In her current leadership role, Darlene does not carry the title of “expert at the top,” but instead sees herself as a mentor, collaborator, and resource for her team. She is passionate about supporting and building systems that allow therapists to thrive and families to feel confident, supported, and empowered throughout their communication journey.
Joshua Trevino
M.S., BCBA Director of Behavioral Health Services
Hi, I’m Joshua Trevino, and I’m honored to serve as Director of Behavioral Health here at Kindred Communication. I’m a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and a former Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA) who holds a Master’s in Counseling with an emphasis in Applied Behavior Analysis and a Bachelor’s in Communication Disorders — a foundation that lets me bridge both behavior and communication in the way I support each family and individual. My path into this work has spanned decades of lived experience and professional practice across the systems families navigate every day. Throughout, my aim has stayed the same: supporting individuals as they thrive and reach the goals that matter most to them. That starts with the question I ask every family I meet: “How can I help?”
What guides my work is a person-centered philosophy. I believe in presuming competence — which to me means robust communication access from day one, no skills an individual has to “earn” before being given a voice, and expectations that rise to meet the person rather than shrink to fit a label. I see leadership the same way: not as having all the answers from the top, but as building systems where our team can thrive and fostering partnerships with the families and individuals we serve, so they feel confident, supported, and truly heard.
This work is personal to me. As the proud parent of an individual who uses AAC and a clinician who sits on both sides of the table, I carry that perspective into everything I do in serving my community. I’m genuinely excited to bring ABA services to families the Kindred way. My door is always open, and I look forward to getting to know you.
- Joshua
Laura Adjunta
M.A., CCC - Licensed Speech-Language Pathologist | Bilingual (English/Spanish)
Hello! My name is Laura Adjunta, and I am a bilingual Speech-Language Pathologist with more than 30 years of experience supporting children, adolescents, and adults with communication differences across the United States and internationally.
I earned my Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Texas at Austin, with specialized training in bilingual speech-language pathology and early childhood intervention. Throughout my career, I have been passionate about understanding the unique strengths, values, and communication styles of individuals and families from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. My commitment to serving diverse communities was further strengthened through participation in a federally funded Title VII program focused on cultural responsiveness and supporting multilingual families.
My clinical experience includes working extensively with autistic individuals, developmental disabilities, and complex communication needs, including non-speaking and minimally speaking communicators. I have supported individuals across the lifespan through speech, language, social communication, executive functioning, AAC, and self-advocacy interventions.
One of the most meaningful chapters of my career was founding and directing a nonprofit organization in Venezuela dedicated to supporting individuals with autism and their families. For more than seven years, I led community advocacy, parent education, fundraising, and therapeutic programs that increased autism awareness and provided holistic support to hundreds of families. This experience reinforced my belief that meaningful progress occurs when individuals, families, and communities are empowered to work together.
I have a particular passion for supporting autistic individuals who may be highly verbal yet continue to experience social-cognitive differences, executive functioning challenges, anxiety, emotional regulation needs, relationship difficulties, and demand-avoidant/PDA-related profiles. My clinical perspective has been shaped by training, mentorship experiences, and the work of Tony Attwood and Isabelle Hénault, as well as leaders in the field of non-speaking autism, AAC, and presumed competence. Their contributions have deepened my understanding of social relationships, emotional well-being, self-awareness, sexuality education, healthy relationships, self-advocacy, and quality of life for autistic adolescents and adults.
A formative experience in my professional journey was spending time at Options Clinic in Petrie, Brisbane, Australia, where I learned from Jane Remington-Gurney and clinicians supporting non-speaking autistic individuals. Their work reinforced my commitment to presuming competence, honoring all forms of communication, and recognizing the strengths and potential of individuals whose abilities may be underestimated when communication differences are present.
My work is relationship-centered, neurodiversity-affirming, and family-focused. I believe communication begins by assuming competence and creating opportunities for authentic connection. Whether through spoken language, AAC, writing, gestures, or other forms of communication, I am passionate about helping individuals find their voice and participate more fully in their homes, schools, workplaces, relationships, and communities.
As a bilingual clinician, I enjoy partnering with families to create meaningful communication opportunities that honor each person’s unique strengths, culture, language, and lived experience. - Laura

Carsyn VanDoren
Licensed Speech and Language Pathologist Assistant
Hi! My name is Carsyn VanDoren, and I’m a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant here at Kindred Speech and Language.
I was first drawn to this field because of my own childhood experience with speech. I produced the /r/ sound as a nasal sound, which meant I couldn’t pronounce my own name clearly. I was made fun of often and eventually began practicing on my own to improve how I spoke. That experience shaped my commitment to helping others feel heard, encouraged, and confident as they develop their communication skills.
Once I began working in the field, I quickly realized that articulation is just one part of communication—and that people may need support in many different areas and modalities. I’m passionate about creating safe, engaging, and fun spaces where clients can build their communication skills with confidence. I love using play-based and client-led therapy to support each person’s growth in a way that feels natural and motivating.
I believe that everyone deserves to be understood and celebrated for who they are. I'm here to help individuals and families build strong connections and find joy in communication. - Carsyn

Karen Cladis
Licensed Marriage And Family Therapist
I have worked as a Marriage and Family Therapist in Irvine, California, for the past 26 years. My practice initially focused on helping individuals with anxiety and depression and working with couples to restore their relationships. I still do a great deal of this work but also now spend equal time with people on the autism spectrum. I support the parents of children with autism spectrum disorder helping to maintain their families and marriages. As well as work directly with young adults with ASD. This specialty came about primarily because of my daughter Emma, who is a non-speaking autistic young woman. I know firsthand as a parent the difficulties and possibilities of raising a child with these challenges. As a professional, I draw on my years of training and incorporate that with my personal experience to support the autistic community.
Lori Barnett
Communication Specialist
Hi! I’m Lori Barnett, and I am one of the Communication Specialists and Practitioners at Kindred Communication. I have a diverse background with experience in education, overseas mission work, office management, work as a certified coach and communication specialist, self published co-author of children’s books, and small business owner. I often describe myself as an Achiever, Believer, Communicator, and Dreamer. It is a passion of mine to connect with others through our own stories and discover the strengths within to build a deeper connection and purpose. I am thrilled to join the Kindred team and bring this experience to equipping families and nurturing the growth of a worldwide community.
In 2004, I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in music. Since then, and through years of varied opportunities and experiences all over the world, I have found that my passion is working one-on-one with individuals and families and breaking down perceived barriers to reach goals in learning and everyday life.
I have had the privilege to work with and learn from educators, therapists, and many other professionals, but my greatest learning experiences have been from the one-on-one education I acquired from individuals living the experience and navigating various challenges. While continuing this work virtually, I also had the opportunity to complete additional training and certifications in the various AAC modalities in which we train and support families.
Communication is one part of a person's need for a full, engaging, and meaningful life, and finding the right strategies, supports, tools, and resources is life changing and sets a foundation for success. I have found that an individualized, whole-person approach is not only freeing but also empowering to the person and their family.

Josh Cooper
Co-founder
Hi, I’m Josh Cooper and I am one of the Co-Founder’s at Kindred Communication. I started working with parents of children with autism spectrum disorder at a company I founded, Cooper Life. Helping young adults find purpose and ambition is a passion of mine and I was able to do that through health and fitness. What initially started as a fitness company, organically grew, to include mentorship programs, life-skill development programs, and more.
Through my work, I realized that I wanted to do more for families of children with Autism. What I noticed in the Autism community was a lack of resources that teach and coach families to communicate with their loved ones…..Kindred was born.
When I’m not working I love mornings with my two kids- drinking good coffee, working out and surfing Southern California’s beaches. I value God and family above everything, I love spending quality time with my family and friends.
My wish is for you to simply communicate with your child.
Josh Cooper
